design Envisioning gardens that inspire

"The great challenge for the garden designer is not to make the garden look natural, but to make the garden so that the people in it will feel natural." - Lawrence Halprin

A successful garden integrates architecture and nature in a way that generates an appreciation for both. Good design, the foundation of a successful garden, integrates the needs and desires of the people with the potentials of the site, to create a harmonious interplay of structures, surfaces, plants, and the surrounding landscape that delights and inspires all who experience the garden.

Green Forward’s design services encompass a range of options including:

  • on-site landscape consultations
  • informal sketches and suggestions
  • comprehensive garden design and blueprints

We can offer landscaping ideas to enhance a view or an entryway, select a few perfect plants to optimize an established planting, renovate a garden that no longer meets your needs, or plan an entire landscape for your new home or undeveloped lot.

The many design elements we may incorporate include:

  • flagstone, moss rock, steel and wood (walkways, walls, patios, fences, arbors)
  • efficient water use (irrigation and water harvesting systems)
  • ornamental water features (fountains, pools)
  • edible gardens (fruit trees, herbs, vegetable gardens)
  • and of course, the best possible plants and planting combinations.

As Santa Fe landscapers we believe that we must treat the earth kindly as it becomes more fragile. Green Forward uses a variety of native plants and other local materials in our gardens, and we incorporate Xeriscape and Permaculture principles in our design solutions in order to help build healthy ecosystems, starting with your own back yard.

Your garden is your outdoor living space, your threshold to the natural world: it should be developed with thoughtful understanding and careful attention to detail.

How we work:

For most projects we start by meeting with you at your site.  If need be, we will visit your site and work with you via phone calls and email. Should we decide to proceed together, we then give you a proposal which outlines in more detail how we will approach the design development. When the design is complete, the final step in the process is to create a rough estimate for installation of the garden.
